Sublime works of art that provide a deeper knowledge of one of the masters―with Leonardo and Michelangelo―of High Renaissance art, and one of the most important artists in the development of European painting.

Published to accompany a major exhibition at the Museo del Prado, this book focuses on a crucial but hitherto neglected part of Raphael’s oeuvre: the work he and his pupils executed in Rome during the seven years from 1513 to the artist’s death in 1520. Nearly ninety works―including paintings such as Saint Cecile and Portrait of Baldassere Castiglione, as well as drawings and a tapestry―illustrate the ways in which Raphael employed a range of technical devices, many of which were highly novel and enjoyed considerable influence. Raphael’s workshop methods eventually became a model for the great artistic enterprises of the seventeenth century, notably those of Rubens, Bernini, and Pietro da Cortona. Essays by Tom Henry, Paul Joannides, Ana González Mozo, and Bruno Martín survey Raphael’s late paintings in chronological order, explore his range of styles, and investigate the role of his workshop in the design and production of his pictures. 288 illustrations, 238 in color

Highly recommended for readers looking to gain in-depth knowledge of a master, the inner-workings of his studio and the tremendous influence he has had on art. The book explores many of the late projects, portraits and commissions Raphael received. The book also highlights a significant amount of work that Guilio Romano executed in collaboration with Raphael and gives a spotlight on a few of his most gifted followers and their ground breaking work. The book itself is wonderfully crafted, cloth bound, with great layout and design, and numerous full page color reproductions, which to me is what makes this book a must have for art enthusiasts and curious art lovers everywhere

Art book publishers seem to be finally getting around to the idea that the books are about the paintings, not the writing about the paintings. Meaning that the focus has become on the reproductions, not some abtruse analysis. These repro's are fine, and today we see more art books like this one with fine quality details facing the whole painting. And using the entire page for most repro's. What can be the purpose of a white border around a repro in a book? But the painting details are the ticket here. Let's see more art books like this. That it is aimed at a limited period of his life is to the better. Would that all art books were as good.

To the publishers and authors,
Thanks so much for a superb book. It is really at the apex of what I was expecting ... great writing, great coverage of the material, and first class color reproductions.

I know the title is Late Raphael, but i I missed my favourite maddonas, so I would love a book on the early and midddle periods of his brilliant painting career. This one is really gorgeous.
