The era of Charles V, a monarch who continually surrounded himself with music for a wide variety of occasions, is an ideal period for exploring polyphony in its proper context. This publication aims to make clear the contributions between this music and its historical context. The various contributions show that polyphony was anything but other-worldly. The humanist values, including the idea of music as a means of expression, gradually took over the medieval construct of polyphony, ultimately shaking its very foundations.
