BlueGrass- Bluegrass Mandolin Solos That Every Parking Lot Picker Should Know By Steve Kaufman. Re: Best Mandolin Method Books. The grand daddy for bluegrass mandolin - The Jack Tottle book from 1976. I never thought of these collections of solos as method books. The Greg Horne method seem pretty thorough to me. After being a believer and devoted student of Kaufman's same guitar series, I have purchased and dog-eared the Series 1 edition of the same series. For part 2, I am no less pleased. Kaufman does a great job of choosing the most common tunes still being played professionally and in jam sessions and gives you three different levels of difficulty from basic to really-darn-tough. All of Kaufman's work I have purchased has been my most studied material and this book will be no different. Recommended indeed!

Somehow - I stole this on ebay - a new copy for $24 plus $3 shipping for a Christmas present for my husband. I think it has the list price of $65 or $70 on the back. It has 6 CDS and the tab. It is well worth the money of $65/$70 because Kauffman really has put a lot of time and is a good teacher. My husband loves these instructional books with CDS. He likes Kauffman and bought his gospel bluegrass book first.

He has small TV/ DVD player in his music room - just slips the CDS into the TV and has a remote control to play along with the CDS. CDS are great - as they help you keep time and like my husband said - if you play by yourself and you make a mistake you won't keep playing - you flounder around, start over and whatever. But if you play along with the CD you have to keep going - mistakes and all or Kauffman will leave you behind quickly. My husband said that is what these CDS / instruction books have helped him the most with - keeping time. My husband ran through the beginner and now is working on the intermediate. I think he has greatly improved and is sounding more professional. Kauffman - tells you the down up down up pick strokes - which my husband has been playing for years - and never knew about the pick strokes. Pick strokes have a lot to do with your timing too. I think by watching youtube videos on pick strokes / taking a few on line lessons from Banjo Ben / my husband has really improved.

Only improvements to the book - he forgot Cherokee Shuffle and it is on a later CD - it is not in order. The rest of the book matches the CD (which most books are not that organized). Would also be nice if you didn't have to turn pages - which is a major gripe that my husband has - he makes a copy of the page on our printer - and then clips it to the book - so he doesn't have to turn the page - so if you have a copier/printer it is an easy fix but a little bit of a pain.

Already purchased another one of Kauffman's - Four Hour Workout - played without the mandolin ... a lot of the same songs. These are easier versions of the songs - but playing with a band - and Kauffman leaves out the mandolin and you have to play that part. Can use this book with the guitar, mandolin, or violin. You really need to know the songs - almost memorized from the Parking Lot solos before you go on to the Four Hour Workout. We got a good deal on this book on Amazon - for around $28 or $30 ....

Now - I'm looking for the parking lot solos book number one at a good price.
