Grafton, Carol 19th Century Arms & Armor Pictorial Archive Topics: pictorial, archive, belanger, grafton, dover, carol, illustrations, armor, designs, unspecified,. Million Book Project. by Grafton, Carol Belanger; Porret, Henri Désiré.

Series: Dover Pictorial Archive. This book has a very large variety of designs and ornaments for any artist or craftsman. the other Dover Pictorial Archive came with discs, which made it easy to import into my computer for design projects. due to the outstanding price i can understand why a disc was not included, so i was ready to scan the images i liked, but the paper they used for the book is low quality, the printing inks bleed and the true lines. Well packaged, good condition. Would recommend to all interested in this type of book. One person found this helpful.

Carol Belanger Grafton. I bought this book expecting a lot of good pictures and diagrams. I did get that; however, I didn't get anything else.

Carol Belanger Grafton. The saving grace of the book is that the pictures are in fact excellent, and, it does say right on the front cover that the pictures are from ninteenth-century sources. The 1800s' aren't exactly known for their high quality of historical accuracy, and it's only in the most contemporary armour, approximately late 1400's through 1600's, that the illustrations are most reliable

This is original 1981 Dover publication edited by the prolific Caron Belanger Grafton and largely contributed by the equally prolific Rita Weiss. On first examining this book, I was going to give it only 3 stars because there appeared to be no grids for us counted thread embroiderers. There's no Table of Contents and none of the alphabets are labeled...it was only browsing through and happening upon page 43 that I stumbled upon any graphs. While only 8 of the 79 full alphabets have been graphed out in the book, they're really good choices which you could use to personalize a counted thread project--particularly a cross stitch sampler. It cracks me up how intricate some of the alphabets, how the flourishes render the letters unreadable. For example, page 81 is the start of a very "busy" alphabet, so large that there are only 2 letters on each page. But I had to figure out that they're shown sideways because I couldn't make them out! (And even turning it sideways, without going through these in alphabetical order, I bet you wouldn't be able to decipher half of them as letters let alone which letter!)

That said, among the 79 alphabets, there is such a great variety that paging through it might inspire you to graph your own alphabet or learn how to use a light box or transfer paper to outline them on fabric. Of course, other craftsmen and artists, the targets of the title, might be able to find even better use of this book. It has held up pretty well over 3 decades so it's a good start.
