On February 13, 1991, at the age of seventy-four, Kirk Douglas, star of such major motion-picture classics as Champion, Spartacus, and Paths of Glory, was in a helicopter crash, in which two people died and he himself sustained severe back injuries. As he lay in the hospital recovering, he kept wondering: Why had two younger men died while he, who had already lived his life fully, survived?

The opening chapters are riveting. They are followed by a retelling of some events from" The Ragman's Son". I was worried that this was going occupy the rest of this book. However, Kirk leads us gently along his journey to find meaning in his past, present and future. He finds this in his Jewish heritage, but he is not sanctimonious or preachy about it. He doesn't want to convert people to Judaism! He does suggest that self-examination can lead to enlightenment and contentment. In the 50s, I was taught in Parochial school that Jews killed Jesus. I haven't believed this for a long time, but I am aghast that this was taught to me and many others for centuries. I never knew that Kirk was Jewish until recently. It doesn't matter to me, but it did pose problems for Kirk. He talks sparingly about film projects, colleagues and awards. I found this interesting because I am a fan of his films. However, he is circumspect about all of this. He talks about his family but this is not a tell all book of family secrets. He documents his struggles with severe pain that resulted from a serious accident, plus the after-effects from his stroke. In the end, he arrives at a strategy for living that is very simple, positive and universal. His writing style is colloquial and warm. Koik has a healthy sense of humor that also puts the reader at ease. He acknowledges that writing and filmmaking are highly collaborative processes. He gives a lot of credit to his editor. This is remarkable and welcome since we live in a world of super hyperbole and self-aggrandizement. I started by reading "I am Spartacus", followed by "Let's Face It" and "The Ragman's Son". You can read this as a stand alone book, although Ragman's Son would be a good prelude for this book.
