The book works through several exercises whose images you can download and his explanations of the procedures is thorough and interesting. Not your average photography book, nor your average software manual - it is a visual treat and chock-full of idea triggers.

I'm loving this book. I have completed the first 8 lessons and I'm amazed how much I'm learning. I have to say that I have a solid understanding of the PS Elements basics after taking a course through local university.
Sure some of the photos in the demos are weird, but just do the lesson. If you have a creative bone in your body you will see the possibilities of at least one trick per lesson.
Bottom line-
1. know where the tools are and have a basic understanding of their use and function
2. you seek the creative possibility in even your blah photos
3. buy this book, do the lessons and have fun.

This book totally rocks. Kudos to the publisher Wiley for taking the risk and producing a book that is artistic as well as informational and great work on the behalf of Krause for writing it. This isn't the book for a novice PSE9 user who hasn't had experience with a graphics program before. But it will work for someone who is creative, intelligent, has some graphics skills and who wants to work with some really inspirational stuff - think sparrow with a polka dot belly! The images used can be downloaded so you can follow along with the step by step instructions and they are the type of images that you could shoot yourself so you're learning techniques you can use to create art from your own photos.

I bought this book on the basis of some reviews, sight unseen - I wasn't disappointed - quite the opposite. I've showed it to all my students and anyone I know who uses Elements and even Photoshop itself - the techniques can be ported across to Photoshop if you're a user with average skills. If you're looking to learn a lot and be inspired at the same time this is THE Photoshop Elements book to buy.

I am only about half way through this book, but I love it, but I really love doing almost anything in Photoshop. Well written and generally easy to follow instructions for someone experience in Photoshop.

My wife needed help for her digital photography----this book provides clear and unencumbered language for her photo exercises-----one of the clearest instruction manuals she has ever had.

So, there I was at the book store looking through the 4 shelves of photography books. I had the Kelby PSE 9 book set aside as my top pick when I spotted this book. Within moments of flipping it open I knew this was the book for me! It is filled with beautiful photos that you actually get to work with - you download them from the authors web site so the book becomes that much more personal. The book covers pretty much everything you will want to do with Elements and does so with practical real world examples. Will you create twisted up, mangled sky scrapers or make your photos look like they were colored by hand? Maybe not every day but the principles apply to everyday tasks like correcting the perspective of buildings or fixing an area of a photo where the color isn't quite right.

Does it cover each and every little widget? No, but you will finish this book with the knowledge and confidence to overcome any hurdle you may encounter.

This is definitely not a dry old step by step text book. If you're looking for a reference guide to look up the specific function of a button, this might not fit the bill.

I'm not usually a fan of instructional books, but this one really worked for me. I picked it up because of its beautiful photographs and clean layout, and also because I had a feeling that this book would be packed with an unusual amount of practical information and creative insights (I own two other of Jim Krause's books on photography and love them both). Well, I was right. I think this is the first time I've worked through a book cover to cover--it was like eating candy; every time I finished one of the book's exercises, I just wanted to start on the next one. The user begins each exercise by downloading a sample image from the internet (I ended up downloading ALL the book's images at once so I wouldn't have to keep going back the Web). Each exercise was fun, interesting and almost always relevant to the kinds of things I want to do with my own pocket camera and new digital SLR. I am a low-tech person and had next to no real experience in Elements or Photoshop when I started working with this book. It is clear and straightforward, and I'd say the author does a good job of explaining things for new users without dumbing it down for the advanced readers. I got stuck a couple of times, but then I generally just backed up a step or two in the exercise I was working on and figured things out (the book's step-by-step instructions seem to be accurate, but I had to get used to a few idiosyncrasies in the Elements program itself before I got really smooth with its use). The book covers a ton of different things you can do with your camera, things like exploring different ways of converting color images to black and white, improving the look of just about any photo, rescuing problem images, eye-catching contemporary outcomes, altered realities, abstractions and artful special effects, just to name a few. The book's lessons are communicated through step-by-step exercises and also by quite a few "bonus" photos that are sprinkled throughout its pages (these are especially fun to look at and they gave me a lot of ideas about things I'd like to try with my camera and with Elements). This is a really FUN book, and I have zero reservations about recommending it with a solid 5 stars.
This book was recommended to me by the instructor of a photoshop course I took. It is excellent, with all kinds of good ideas and excercises. It is best for someone who has t least a basic knowledge of photoshop, as it is more than a basic first steps level book.
