Victor Burgin (born 1941) is an artist and a writer. Burgin first came to attention as a conceptual artist in the late 1960s (Harrison & Wood, 1992; Walker, 2001) and at that time was most noted for being a political photographer of the left, who would fuse photographs and words in the same picture. He has worked with photography and film, calling painting "the anachronistic daubing of woven fabrics with coloured mud" (Burgin, 1976).

This book contains essays from other people (and a few from himself) who write on photography. For myself- his writings and of course, Walter Benjamin were my favorite sections. Burgin is one of my favorite image-makers because he really thinks about what he constructs and how it would be viewed by other people. And as we all are fully aware of now, there are people shooting images and having a field day with it, but this book definitely is a good way to SLOW DOWN and think!
