This is an in-depth analytic expansion of the idea that art should be the basis of education, not the polishing of decorative skills within educational systems that repress the social adaptation and personality development of the individuals it is created to help. To arrive at his conclusions, Read intensively studied the art of children, presumably because their inner selves are more clearly revealed by virtue of having been psychologically repressed for a shorter time than their adult counterparts. This is a book for those with serious interests in both art and education who also are willing to dig deep and follow complex analytical arguments. It is not for people with short attention spans.
