What is calligraphy? Good books. Left-Handed Calligraphy: Some Thoughts. Traditional Pigments and Inks. Lettering & misc. Italic calligraphy is a little more decorative than roundhand, but maintains a very regular appearance. This is partly to do with the letter-forms themselves and partly about factors such as spacing and proportions. To form an italic letter 'a' you may push the pen back a little from right to left to start with. Bring it round in a smooth lozenge shape, with a slightly pointy base somewhat over to the left. This is what gives the body of the letter its slant.

But the left-handed writer requires a special orientation which most guidebooks on the subject do not .

But the left-handed writer requires a special orientation which most guidebooks on the subject do not provide. This excellent study remedies that situation handsomely. Generously illustrated, it offers full, intensive coverage of the art of calligraphy from the left-handed writer's point of view. Four model alphabets are introduced-Italic Hand, Chancery Cursive, Uncial Hand, and the Foundation Hand-each providing valuable lessons in the mastery of left-handed calligraphy. With each lesson, students will move forward confidently to new levels of skill in this time-honored art.

As a right-handed person, I try to provide answers to the best of my ability, but I sometimes find myself stymied! You can imagine how thrilled I was, then, to meet left-handed calligrapher Elisabeth Young of ElisaAnne Calligraphy. At one point, my great-aunt purchased me a calligraphy kit for Italic hand (which uses a broad-edge nib). Since I am left-handed, there is no way those kit nibs would have ever worked for me.
