Exploring Geology by Reynolds/Johnson/Kelly/Morin/Carter is a new, innovative textbook intended for an introductory college geology course, such as Physical Geology. This ground-breaking, visually spectacular book was designed from cognitive and educational research on how students think, learn, and study.

Nearly all information in the book is built around nearly 2,700 photographs and stunning illustrations, rather than being in long blocks of text that are not articulated with figures. These annotated illustrations help students visualize geologic processes and concepts, and are suited to the way most instructors already teach. To alleviate cognitive load and help students focus on one important geologic process or concept at a time, the book consists entirely of two-page spreads organized into 19 chapters. Each two-page spread is a self-contained block of information about a specific topic, emphasizing geologic concepts, processes, features, and approaches. These spreads help students learn and organize geologic knowledge in a new and exciting way.

Inquiry is embedded throughout the book, as is the way geologists investigate problems. The title of each two-page spread and topic heading is a question intended to get readers to think about the topic and become interested and motivated to explore the two-page spread for answers. Each chapter is a learning cycle, which begins with a visually engaging two-page spread about a compelling geologic issue. Each chapter ends with an Investigation that challenges students with a problem associated with a virtual place. The world-class media, spectacular presentations, and assessments are all tightly articulated with the textbook. This book is designed to encourage students to observe, interpret, think critically, and engage in authentic inquiry, and is highly acclaimed by reviewers, instructors, and students.

This book is so random. Pictures all over with little blurbs of explanation. Nothing truly links into each other and if you are trying to find a definition or explanation of anything specific good luck. Not even a small glossary in back to help straighten out a firm definition. It will reference something pages before you get a definition of it. I guess I just like being able to actually learn something out of my textbooks.
  • Water
This book is unusual in that it is broken into mini 2 page units - each with very good illustrations, explaining a single geologic concept. If you want to learn geology in small and understandable doses, this is the book for you.

This book was needed in a college class. Buying the book here saved me quite a bit of money! This book was in excellent condition

I am enjoying book.

We ordered this used book which was a bit ratty but not overly so and then the professor decided it was not necessary for the class. returning the book was easy.

As someone who lectures to adult audiences on Northern Arizona geology using powerpoint slides loaded with photos and drawings, I was very interested in this visual approach to teaching geology. Unfortunately, although the book is billed as suitable for university course, I found it more on the high school or even junior high school level. The photos and diagrams are fine but the accompanying "text", if it could be called that, is inadequate and too dumbed down to qualify for a university level course. "Rocks for Jocks" maybe, but not for serious students of geology. Better to choose a standard text like "Dynamic Earth" by Skinner, Porter and Park, a book that has many excellent and effective visual aids along with a thorough university level text.

The book got here before expected date, and in the condition it said it was. Overall I would order from them again and recommend their service.
It really helped me out in my class. The book was exactly what I needed and the price was the best.
