I "HAD" to get this for my english class but let me tell you. This book was exceptional when it came to working out complex writing and perfecting essays through structure and depth. I found myself often just flipping through to chapters we hadn't bothered covering because it was just that helpful. I kicked college english's ass and I honestly think it was because of this book and of course my wonderful teacher. I really recommend it even if you just want to get your writing into better shape!

This reference is excellent. The codes used for easy reference work, but they can seem cumbersome when you see them throughout the book. But a reference of any kind needs to be easy (simple) to use. The Writer's Reference was written for high school and college students. The examples are many and varied. I wish A Writer's Reference was bounded other than comb binding. The plastic combs will break over time. But the nice thing about the comb binding is that book lays flat.

I was disappointed I bought this thinking it would also cover some areas relating to writing in the workplace and other nonacademic situations. Earlier in addition of this reference which I have owned and since lost, and include excellent sections covering nonacademic writing situations. It seems that the publisher has since decided to remove this material. This was a mistake. This reference do not contain any information which is not also in other books by these authors. So in a way this purchase was a complete waste of my money. However I could not return it to get my money back as I purchased this through Amazon from third-party source. I gave the book 3 stars because of all the books published by these authors I think that "a writer's reference is the best one, mainly due to its practicality and ease of use. However, if you are not a student or an academic, you don't need this.

I had to buy this book for my English class this year, and when I first bought it I only thought about how much I could sell it for when the years over. Now that I've read some of it I am NEVER selling it. This book is a bible for anything writing related. It has everything from the absolute have-to-haves like MLA format, to how to make your paper just overall sound better. I'll definitely use this book for the rest of my college experience.

As a professor at a U.S. university, I recommend this text in every course I teach. You cannot effectively communicate ideas if you cannot write. Knowing fundamentals of writing, then applying standardized writing styles is an essential skill that will not only get students though a college program, but will make them indispensable to future employers.

I've used every edition of Hacker's Writer's Reference and have found no other text that is as useful to my students. Of course, they can always purchase the style manual associated with their major field of study, but that won't cover the styles and guides needed to write in courses outside of that major.

Made this purchase awhile ago but never wrote a review, as I was going through and doing some oter reviews thought I would add this one since it stands out to me. I love this book! It helped me with my college english class a lot, I got an A in the class and will be keeping this book always just as a reference. HOWEVER UNFORTUNATELY the book was in poor condition, I would have contacted the seller for a replacement but I didn't have time I needed the book for school so I let it go but the book have very obvious water damage, it is readable and usable but does not look good and the posting said it was in good condition.
