Bereavement in Judaism (Hebrew: אֲבֵלוּת, avelut, mourning) is a combination of minhag and mitzvah derived from Judaism's classical Torah and rabbinic texts. The details of observance and practice vary according to each Jewish community. In Judaism, the principal mourners are the first-degree relatives: parent, child, sibling, and spouse. There are some customs that are unique to an individual mourning a parent.

Of all the books on the Jewish outlook on death and bereavement, probably none is as complete as this one. It offers the comforting, caressing hand of faith and spiritual strength, but there is much, much more. Now out of print, Rabbi Weiss's Death and Bereavement: A Halakhic Guide, remains perhaps the single best volume ever written on the Jewish way of dying, and mourning. There is a long tradition of proper action to take at this most sensitive, and, often, debilitating time. Rabbinic law and traditional Jewish culture provide a sensible and meaningful pathway, taking one from the moments before death through the year of mourning which follows.
Rabbi Weiss explains every detail, writing as though he were a much loved friend giving advice. His language is understandable, his approach, humane. The tone of the book is one of sympathy and sensitivity, but the presentation of Halakhic law is clear and concise. Rabbi Weiss also expresses his own deeply held feeling regarding certain of the traditions that have been diminished by the passing of time and the practice of less Orthodox congregations, giving reasoned opinion to support his conviction.
This is a book that needs to be in every Jewish home.
This is a book that needs to be republished, and the sooner, the better.
