Its range is vast, exploring the figure of the serpent from ancient Greek to monuments discovered in the New World, including the mysterious serpent mounds of the mid-west . Much of the focus, however, seems to be divided between ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, ancient India and Mesoamerica, with, as mentioned above, details of the serpent mounds in the Mississippi Valley.

The full title of this book is actually "Ophiolatreia: An Account of the Rites and Mysteries connected with the Origins, Rites and Development of Serpent Worship, in various parts of the World, enriched with interesting traditions and a full description of the celebrated Serpent Mounds and Temples, the whole forming an exposition of one of the phases of Phallic, or Sex Worship."

It is a classic of 19th Century enlightened understanding on the subject. Students will wish to compare this to corresponding volumes in The Golden Bough 12 Volume Set (Cambridge Library Collection - Classics) and to Kenneth Grant's The Magical Revival.

This book is in print and in public domain. Select your reprint with care. A beautiful and accurate privately made reproduction edition in 1/4 Python Skin binding was sold by Weiser Antiquarian in 2012, but there are no descriptions of the books being made by the print-on-demand publishers, and I do not trust them, having been burned more often than not, by inferior reproductions, or worse, character-recognition transcription errors and computer-generated, non-copyedited editions full of mistakes.
