Between the guilt of not telling him about his child and her seesawing emotions, she couldn’t take the chance of seeing him alone. Good for him, she muttered. She speared a piece of side pork in the frying pan and placed the meat on a platter, realizing she sounded like a petulant child

He was pure trouble for an honest woman...

Mattie St. Clair knows that Clint Beaudry is a dangerous man the moment she sets eyes on him. Though she refuses the tall, dark, devastatingly handsome gunman a room in her boardinghouse, Mattie cannot turn him away a second time when he is carried to her door critically wounded. It's best if she just lets this troublesome stranger mend and move on- considering the unwanted feelings of desire he stirs up within her whenever he turns his deep, dangerous gaze her way.

She was more woman than a man could handle...

This beautiful, strong-willed widow does something special to the hardened ex-marshal with her tender, healing touch -- tempting Clint to reconsider his vow never to let another woman into his perilous life. Despite her stubborn independence, Mattie's barely restrained passion tells him that she's been too long without a good man at her side. And since she and her young son both are in desperate need of a hero, what choice does Clint have -- except to become one?

I was so looking forward to reading my second book by this author. Her first book, "Winter Hearts", was very good and I highly recommend it. But this book was a great disappointment to me for it contained mostly the inner thoughts of the hero and heroine that were primarily focused on their lust for each other. There was no relationship building of a substantial nature between the two of them. Their relationship was basically very superficial. I can not stand books like that. The action was so thin at the end and it wasn't all that developed either. Things got wrapped up rather quickly and it wasn't that suspenseful. Spoiler***I also didn't like that the heroine did not consider the consequences of a one-night stand particularly since she was a struggling single mother already. It was irresponsible on the author's part to do this and just added to the superficiality of the characters and the plot.

This was such a good story and as usual Ms McKade created characters who were complex and believable. That is what I love about her stories the depth beyond just the usual cowboy meets girl and falls in love. Her heros have their hang-ups but are characters you can really like and feel for. I could so feel Clint's desire for revenge and his guilt; I truly didn't know what would happen then Maddie turns up pregnant but he made her no promises to return. Each page was a new drama and I wondered how it was going to end. You know Clint will get Maddie in the end but it is a roller coaster. Love it!!

I normally only read contemporary romance novels but on a friend's recommendation I decided to try this one. Loved it!! The author really sucks you into the romance budding between the 2 main characters and I could not put it down.

Fortunately the book is not as awful as the cover. Maureen McKade is always worth a read if you're in the mood for Western Romance.
