According to the legend, six novices living in a Cornish convent strayed from their vows . The seventh faced quite a different fate.

According to the legend, six novices living in a Cornish convent strayed from their vows and were turned to stone. Years later when the convent became the family mansion of the St. Larnston family, fate beckoned to another young virgin. Kerensa Carlee was only a cottage girl, but she possessed great ambition and greater beauty - and she knew how to use them both. Working in the legend-haunted mansion as a lady's maid, Kerensa began her perilous journey into womanhood. On the bookshelvesAll.

Through a series of chance circumstances, Karensa ends up being befriended by Mellyora, daughter of This is one of Victoria Holt's earlier books, and I really liked it because it's somewhat different in tone from many 1960s gothics. The heroine, Karensa Carlee, is a bit of an antiheroine. Early on, we learn that she grew up poor in the cottages surrounding a grand estate in Cornwall. The gulf between her social station and that of the St. Larnston family owning the estate looms large in her life.

She pushed open the door and we went into a large hall in which was a bowl of daffodils and anemones standing on an oak chest. A grandfather clock ticked in a comer and facing the door was a wide staircase. Mellyora signed to me to follow her and we mounted the staircase. I wondered if I could teach myself to read if I took one of the books and looked at it, learned the shape of the letters, copied them, remembered them. I forgot all about cleaning the room.

The books printed under this pen name were accepted by the community and were also hailed by opponents along with historians for their chronological precision, the superiority of writing and concentration to detail. Some of the novels include; (i) Secret for a Nightingale (September-1986). Victoria Holt enjoyed a good physical shape, lifelong affiliation with her mythical agents and publishers.

Love Victoria Holt. Try Lord of the Far Island, Seven for a Secret, On the Night of the Seventh Moon, *Madonna of the Seven Hills and *Light on Lucrezia (*Holt writing as Miss Jean Plaidy with both books being about Lucrezia Borgia).

It is interesting and moves right along. I would have wanted to have the story end differently, but I'm not the author.

It was more worn than I expected. I had to use tape to prevent further damage on the book cover.
This book is about a woman who is obsessed. Her name
is Kerensa and she is obsessed with a superstition ( the folklore
of the, "Legend of the seventh virgin" ) and obsessed with a rich
family/home of the St.Larnstons. She is both a likable and unlikable
character. The story is told from her point of view and that is of a poor
girl later becoming (by chance ?) the live in maid/companion of a wealthy
parson's daughter. Years go by and Kerensa plans her "victory" which is
to become the Lady of the Abbas where the legend of the seven virgins is.
Does she achieve her goal ? Yes and no.
A wonderfully written story and involving through it's twists and turns.
I have always enjoyed Victoria Holt's books over the years.
Atmospheric,lush scenery,well rounded characters,emotion,dialog,in short,
a bit of the Gothic is always in her books. Read this one for this unusual
female named,Kerensa. The reader will not forget her for a long time.
