The room’s other occupants-the Dowager Duchess of Shillington and Lord and Lady St. Claire-continued to stare at her as if she had sprouted a second head. Only Lord and Lady St. Claire’s baby, bundled on the lap of her mother, appeared unaffected by the announcement, letting loose several happy shrieks, incongruous to the charged silence. Lady St. Claire was the first to gain her voice. Bertram lives? Astrid nodded to Jane as she bit into a savory tart.

STORY BRIEF:
Astrid's father arranged her marriage to Bertram. Bertram spent her dowry then abandoned her with no money to live on. Astrid's parents were dead. Astrid hears that Bertram is in Scotland posing as someone else planning to marry an heiress. Astrid travels to Scotland to try to stop him. Along the way she meets Griffin. Highwaymen and feuding clans cause danger for them. Griffin was raised in Texas and came to Scotland to investigate something his mother told him on her deathbed.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
I had trouble liking the heroine Astrid. She was never loved by her parents or husband, so she maintains a cold façade to everyone. Even after Griffin awakens her passionate side, she repeatedly returns to her cold and distant manner. Her coldness causes fights and other conflicts. She repeatedly causes trouble for herself by saying things based on stupid reasoning, for example: she is traveling with Griffin, and they are surrounded by a group of potential bad guys. Griffin tells the bad guys they are married so the men will leave her alone. She stupidly says "we are not married." Another example of poor judgment: a couple is in love, but Astrid takes action and/or tries to influence the girl marry someone else to make the relatives happy. This happens twice, with two different couples. I'm guessing the point is that Astrid was never loved, so she doesn't know how to love or interact with others in a reasonable manner. Somehow, I didn't enjoy reading about her and her predicaments.

Griffin was a good hero: smart, strong, loving and helping others. The author did a nice job with the plot. It was good. The author has a nice voice. I just wish she would have found conflict in ways other than using the woman's unpleasant personality and poor judgment.

I read another book by this author that I enjoyed, so I tried this one. Despite other readers' high praise, I found the book long, boring and ridiculous. I don't want to give the plot away, so I'll just say that the heroine is whiney, the hero is moody and the reasons they fight their attraction for each other are so stupid it's insulting. Plus, I have read newspaper articles with more chemistry. The author fails to develop any of the other characters. Finally, the story is so weak and the background so disjointed, it feels like she made it up as she went along. Pass on it.

Sophie Jordan is able to write a good book, and this time it's just marginally good. Romance is fiction but can anybody imagine such a dumb woman who is supposed to be a duchess, who does not understand anything about feelings, who plunges herself into sex with a stranger, one day come hither and the other day acting as if the man is nothing in her eyes?
Mrs. Jordan then creates a story about Highlanders in which they all seem dumb and uneducated, where murdering a man is done with laughter and no consequences. I have read a lot better Jordan books. I would give it 2,5 stars for her trouble and the fact that she is able to write and I know she mostly does a lot better job.

The Duchess of Derring, Astrid was introduced
in One Night With You. Astrid was Lady Jane
Guthrie's best friend.

Astrid husband Bertram abandoned her after
a few months after they were married took
everything of value with him. After five years,
Astrid didn't know if her husband was alive or
dead. She received anonymous letter stating:
"Bertram in Scotland engaged and he's wedding
an heiress under an assumed identity."

Astrid decided she wasn't going to let Bertram
get away with forgery. She's going to Scotland
and confront her husband. On the way to Scotland
three highwaymen with pistols stopped the coach
looking for money and jewels.

Griffin Shaw, a Texan, went to Scotland to find
his family. He learned he was adopted and that
his parents died from fever while crossing the
ocean to America. Griffin was riding and turned
his horse around, hearing a strange noise. Then,
he heard a woman scream. Griffin came upon a
hold-up where three highwaymen were assaulting
two women on the coach. His rifle ready he was
able to get two highwaymen. However, the third,
before he hit the ground, was able to throw a
huge rock and hit Griffin in the head. Griffin fell
off his horse and passed out. Astrid and her maid
managed to pull him in the carriage. Then, took
him to the nearby Inn for Medical treatment.

Sophie Jordan did a superb job with the hero and
heroine. Griffin is sexy, gentle, kind and warm
hearted. On the other hand, Lady Astrid, had a
cold persona. She'd build a wall around her on the
outside. Astrid's father was a cold person. His wife,
Astrid's mother, ran off with a man when Astrid was
only eight years old. Griffin loved Astrid and knew
that she had a warm heart, was kind and capable
of loving. He's strong-minded and was able to bring
out the warm, kind, loving person Astrid truly was
toward the end of the book.

I highly recommend "Surrender To Me"
