It is a shame Colin Ronan’s The Universe Explained has only now been published, as it provides just the kind of help that the teacher needed. Astronomy in Britain has benefited greatly from the introduction of the National Curriculum. Children are now taught how the Earth is affected by its astronomical neighbours. His text begins at the centre of the Earth and travels to the most distant Galaxy, and his timescale stretches from the all-creating big bang to the present day, with its large powerful telescopes and orbiting spacecraft. What I loved about this book is the way that Ronan always tries to move beyond mere description.

The Universe Explained not only celebrates these explorations but also brings their findings and conclusions within our understanding. Superbly drawn art and brilliant photographs show how the cosmos is investigated, what it contains, and how it works. To deal with this, The Universe Explained incorporates a unique cross-referencing system, one that takes readers both within a particular section and among the other four.
