Middleton and Liittschwager (Here Today: Portraits . They are the authors of Here Today: Portraits of Our Vanishing Species (Chronicle Books, 1991). David Liittschwager has worked with Richard Avedon and Mary Ellen Mark and collaborated on the Endangered Species Project. Susan Middleton is chair of the photography department at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. Her work has appeared in many publications, including Audubon, Natural History, and Smithsonian.

Middleton has authored several books In New York, Middleton worked with photographer David Liittschwager with whom she subsequently collaborated on several projects.

Middleton has authored several books. Her latest book, Spineless: Portraits of Marine Invertebrates, the Backbone of Life, was published in 2014 to critical acclaim. The technique led to an exhibition and her first book, Here Today: Portraits of Our Vanishing Species  . In 1994, she travelled to West Africa as a consultant to the Getty Conservation Institute.

Susan Middleton's and David Liitschwager's portraits of endangered and threatened species are stunning. Their work is not just photographically exciting but compelling-the photographs themselves are a simple gesture of compassion. Thirty-six endangered California species-from the Valley Oak to the Desert Bighorn Sheep, from the Tiburon Mariposa Lily to the North American River Otter- are shown here in technically superb and intensely sensitive black-and-white and color portraits.
