Author Information: Dr Roy Aronson currently works in a small private veterinary practice in the City Bowl in Cape Town.

Wildlife vets have even more of a challenge, since there is less data known . That’s why I was eager to read Dr. Aronson’s latest book.

Wildlife vets have even more of a challenge, since there is less data known about their patients and large wild animals can't be lured into a carrier with a biscuit. The author was working as a biologist in the South African Navy, when a chance encounter with an injured wild seal made him decide to be a vet, a dream he’d had since childhood. He worked as a farrier and a vet inspector at an abattoir before going into private practice in Cape Town, where he treats non-native and domestic species, as well as wildlife in game parks and zoos.

The heart-wrenching and adventure-filled stories of a South African wild animal vet and his colleagues. When do you watch a wild animal suffer and let nature take its course, and when do you intervene? In his more than twenty-five years as an African vet, Dr. He has tracked lions and cheetahs, anesthetized rhinoceroses and king cobras, collared rogue elephants, performed eye surgery on a lion out in the bush, been attacked by a puff adder, come face to face with an angry hybrid wolf, and nearly lost a foot to a crocodile.

Much like all our lives when we are young, the book starts out slow and wanders for a short time. The author is allowing us to know who he is, so be patient and don't put the book down. Once the veterinary practice is on solid ground, we travel with Dr. Aronson through medical adventures in the Bushveld and into local animal conservation sites. The stories are amazing and highly unique and he deals with all kinds of wildlife. Other medical specialists are introduced on occasion which makes for an even richer experience. He shares his failures, fear and feelings too.....The doctor believes that since we are viewing wildlife in thier territories (safaris), we have an obligation to try and help the injured. This is not a popular view, but I agree - especially since many of the animals are endangered. I hope this isn't his last book. I want to read more.

This kind of read is like the proverbial hot knife through butter... it was very hard for me to put it down. I couldn't stop because it's just so interesting! His medical explanations were very easy to understand, his experiences were interesting, his personna was likeable. This is a book (a series of stories from a vets POV) that stands on its own - apart from safari guides, conservationists, tourists, etc. I didn't know that lions could get TB! Or that elephants who are otherwise excellent parents will abandon their young if need be for the sake of the procreating adults to survive. Dr. Aronson writes vividly: you are there. I can only hope that he has or will write more as he is very talented in his flowing style.

Roy Aron tells interesting tales about his work on wild animals in South Africa. His patients range in size from hedgehogs to elephants, and his dedication to preserving the lives and health of animals in their natural habitat is inspiring. This is more a book of short vignettes -- and it is presented as such -- than a chronological account of his practice, and those interested in the care and treatment of wildlife will enjoy it. A summary chapter elucidating Dr. Aron's philosophy and how his views may have been affected by his experience would have helped. The book ends rather abruptly.

My only complaint was that the stories came to an end far too soon. I liked the authors style of writing and hope he moves on to another set of stories about his life of veterinary services in Africa. Unlike some of the comments regarding medications used and denoted weight and measurement conversions, I was happy to have this information having worked for a large animal surgical clinic for a period of time, I found it interesting that of course, some of the same medications were used for these African animals. Some of the fascinating information about fish, wild cats and rhinos was very interesting to know.

A fascinating true account by a veterinarian who, while treating domestic and farm animals for a living, makes frequent forays into the treatment of the great majority of South Africa's wild life including lions, elephants, crocodiles and even snakes to name but a few.
Working largely in the prime wildlife area around Hoedspruit and the western boundary of the Kruger Park, Roy Aronson's book is sure to delight wildlife aficionados the world over.

I just finished reading this amazing book. I was upset when it ended. I wanted more, more more!! Dr Aronson has an incredible way of writing a story that makes you feel you were there with him. His explanations when using medical jargon makes it easily understandable for the lay person. The stories flow beautiful. I can almost hear him telling the stories. His awe and humility come through in the stories and I felt I could identify very strongly with his feelings during each experience.

As an animal lover, and avid zoo-goer, I am thrilled to have a deeper understanding of and respect for the animals, and the people who respectfully take care of them.

There are so many aspects to the book which made it worth reading, a definite MUST read for any animal lover and one who wants to know more about a Vet's life.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
No one who has ever looked out over the bush-veld and had your breath taken away by the azure blue sky and the sun bleached blond grass, can ever forget that.
I have now lived on the other side of the world for 7 years (in New Zealand) but was instantly transported back to Africa.
This amazing book of short stories threaded together by a great nature lover takes one back to smells and sounds of the early morning bush-veld when you get ready to go out on a game drive. He shared his love and passion and motivation with you and give you incredible insights into what a vet's life and a wild game vet's life can be. Only too soon does one arrive at the acknowledgments and left wanting more. Buy this and enjoy it.
Africa at her best!
