Minnesota Trees (Rev). Believe it or not for a book of natural history, I found Waters's book hard to put down, and not only because I'm a Lake Superior boy (having been working on the Greatest Lake since I was 15 years old)

Minnesota Trees (Rev). Believe it or not for a book of natural history, I found Waters's book hard to put down, and not only because I'm a Lake Superior boy (having been working on the Greatest Lake since I was 15 years old). It's just flat-out well done, and the story has many an intersting twist and turn, from the slow pushing out of the Indians living around the Lake at the time of European settlement to the development of lumbering on the north shore.

This Minnesota Tree guidebook helps identify trees in both summer and winter. I appreciated the key as well as drawings of the buds and leaves. Definitely recommended!

This book uses an outline approach to simplify tree identification. It is not a traditional field guide. Following the outline, you can zero in on a single tree subspecies, or narrow down your selection to a few.
It is a good companion to the Audubon Trees: Eastern Region. Unlike the Audubon guide, you cannot "leaf" through pages of similar trees looking for the one you are standing in front of. On the other hand, I often find myself looking at Minnesota Trees first, then checking the Audubon field guide photographs to verify my finding.
I'm glad I bought this book.
