Even for the non-scientist, this is a readable presentation of the interesting history of the study of enzymes. H.C.F. presents a good selection of interesting historical publications to illustrate his observations on the times, places and scientific thought of these pioneers of biology and enzymology. His insight, as a biochemist himself, is astute and fascinating.

This book is a compilation of the major scientific papers that built the field of enzyme kinetics, from Reaumur in the XVIII century. The book is really a jewel, even in our days where Google can offer us a glimpse of most scientific literature. Two criticisms can be made. First, there is major absence: The paper by Leonor Michaelis and Maud Menten is not included!!! I have this paper in German. But a traduction in English would have been great. Second, although most of the allosteric work developed on hemoglobin was not directly linked to enzyme kinetics, it would have been nice to have the papers by Hill, Adair and Klotz.
