I got this textbook for my Environmental Geology course, and it's a purchase I was happy to make. If you're contemplating between this and the newer edition, I'd suggest you buy this one. The information is straightforward, comprehensive, and manages to refrain from being overwhelming. It does assume you have about high school-level (maybe AP level?) background in chemistry but it doesn't go in too deeply; it explains processes in a very delineated fashion, almost step-by-step, so it's pretty easy to follow. It's not a hassle to read in the slightest -- I recommend this textbook highly.

This book is a great textbook for my geology class. My only problem with it is that it is several years old, so it is a little outdated. However, the newest editions don't always have a ton of new information, so it was worth having a slightly older edition to save money.
