I actually decided to post this review so I could attach an actual photo of the book, but while I'm here, I'll say this was a great College refresher course of my high school algebra. This book covers in just 340+ pages what I learned over two years and two text books, and I found it to be useful as a compressed review of what I had learned in high school. I kept this book to re-refresh my knowledge in case lost any of my skills through lack of use, and I did use it that, but later purchased more copies to use when I tutored a nephew who has having trouble with algebra, and then later I used it as a way to quickly help my own kids build their match skills.

I used this book in a college algebra course but it is even more valuable for adult students with little math background; also great for gifted high school students, a lot of them work on there own and see a tutor a few times a week.

Great resource for 'non-algebra' topics such as

graphing rational functions,

matrix multiplication,

permutations,

and more.

For example, in discrete math the instructor assumes you know about permutations; if you don't, you're screwed. The instructor will go over it in five minutes of class time; the discrete book would be incomprehensible because the author also assumes you know the info already and goes into complex ideas on the subject. College algebra gives you the basics on permutations; worth the cost of purchase right there.

The book does not go into detail with explaining problems and only gives one or two examples then moves on. Also, the book jumped into the lessons pretty quickly without any review to go back on. Overall, this book isn't that great explaining, and seems very fast paced.

Rigorously covers all topics normally found in a college level algebra or pre-calculus course: functions, polynomials, linear equations (two and three variables), Matrices & Determinants. Additionally the first three chapters cover introductory topics such as exponents and radicals and the final chapters cover Complex Numbers & Vectors, Series, Induction and Probability and Vector - which may or may not be covered in some courses. Odd-numbered solutions in the back.

A very good book to refresh your forgotten algebra however the rigor might be a bit much if you're trying to learn college algebra on your own for the first time. Generally the first few pages of each chapter or sub-chapter is devoted to proofs of the subject matter being discussed. A good supplement to any modern college algebra book if you are currently taking a course in the subject.

This text isn't awful, but it does jump into things a bit quickly for someone who hasn't taken algebra for about a decade. If you need to use this text as part of a college program, I definitely recommend "Forgotten Algebra", ISBN 0812019423 as a refresher (or suppliment) before tackling this text. It will be well worth the extra [money] spent!
