This book is a showcase of the diversity in the science and practice of engineering geology. It is based on talks presented at the 34th International Geological Congress (34IGC) held in Brisbane, Australia in August 2012. Sir John Knill presented the first Hans Cloos lecture at the 9th IAEG congress in Durban, South Africa in 2002 (Knill 2003). Knill also discussed the relationship between geology and engineering, pointing out ‘Engineering and geology ar. nherently and intellectually very different subjects.
