Victorian life was suffused with death. The advent of snapshots sounded the death knell for the art - as most families would have photographs taken in life. Epidemics such as diphtheria, typhus and cholera scarred the country, and from 1861 the bereaved Queen made mourning fashionable. Trinkets of memento mori - literally meaning "remember you must die" - took several forms, and existed long before Victorian times.

Christine was was shunned following the Profumo Affair and lived most of her life in the shadow of what happened to her when she was young. She was exploited, used and branded as a scarlet woman and she deserves our sympathy. That era was brought back into sharp focus this week with the death of Christine Keeler, the woman who was at the heart of one of the most notorious political scandals of modern times.

The ONE book you need when someone dies "More than just rituals, this manual will help you understand what needs to be done, and to do it in a style that will comfort and sustain you. This book is about good goodbyes that are worthy of the people we loved, that will help heal the aching hearts and empty spaces. I offer it to you in love and in the name of those who have gone on before, who have taught me more than I have ever wanted to know about death — and more than I ever thought possible about life." From the Foreword "Remembering a Life" covers the immediate decisions that need to be made, as well as giving information on home funerals, funeral homes, planning the funeral and memorial services, burial, cremation, green burial, grieving, coping, remembering, and making your own funeral plans.

The subject of the book, the death of a loved one, is a subject everyone would rather not face. However, it is an experience fundamental to everybody's life sooner or later. Anne Keeler Evans from the very first page of this invaluable book, shows the way and the how with compassion. The books gives, in straightfoward and loving language, guidelines for some of the most painful of decisions, ideas for ceremonies and words of comfort during the darker moments of grief.

During the recent illness and death of my older brother, I had the book with me at the hospital, and later it went with my sister-in-law to her home. Many times during those miserable days, "Remembering A Life" was picked up, passages from it read out, information taken from it and used.

"Remembering A Life" is a book everybody should have on their bookshelves.

Really useful information for dealing with the immediate practical details. How to write services, how to get thru the day, how to deal with overwhelming grief. Written by a woman minister who's been thru it all with members of her own family. At the end there's a section on how to get your own act together: the paperwork and lists so you don't have to go thru what Terry Schiavo did. A really sweet and helpful book.

Luckily, I haven't needed to use the book for my own purposes, but as a physician, it is great to have a book to refer my patients to after a loss. This book is easy to read and guides you through all the options for ways to celebrate the life of a loved one who has passed. It appeals to both the religious and agnositic.
