Illness narratives are mobilised to make sense of the experiences, which are in each case centred on the impact on sexual identity, sexual relationships and gender opportunities. Riessman-Kohler examines masculinity and multiple sclerosis and points to the break-down of traditional marriage relationships when partners cannot cope with the disease state.
