The first two chapters are my favorite and make the whole book worth it. So helpful in describing the social/emotional needs of gifted students. It was a required textbook for a class for my master's degree, but since then, I have shared this book with parents of my students, with other teachers and with my school counselors. This is my third copy of the book because I keep loaning it out and then "losing" it. :)

University level concepts and studies. It seems thorough in shedding light on the emotional world of gifted children. It is the first book that didn't make me feel like I was a the only parent had intense children. I am using it as a guide in parenting and advocacy in the schools.

This book is an excellent textbook, providing general information on the key points for counseling gifted children. It explains Dabrowski's Theory of Positive Disintegration, covers preventive counseling, discusses assessment tools, and gives basic information on many other topics related to the needs of gifted children.

Its limitations are that it doesn't go in depth on most topics (but a textbook covering a broad area isn't the forum for in depth coverage), it isn't intended for counseling gifted adults, and it was written in 1993. Because of this, many readers will want to read other literature. However, it's the right place to go to when beginning a study of counseling gifted individuals because it's overview information is complete and well-written.

Dr. Silverman covers all the issues that our gifted children bring to us, in Counseling... I have two profoundly gifted children, and I wish I read this book sooner - it helps SO much in my understanding of them, of what they are going through. We, as parents, are our children's first counselor, and this book makes it so much easier for us to "do the job" for our gifted children.
Characteristics of giftedness, emotional aspects, over-excitabilities, special needs, peers, home, school, even multi-cultural and gender issues are dealt with in this comprehensive volume.
And every counselor, psychologist, and other professional who deals with gifted children shoudl read this book, and keep it as reference on their shelf... close at hand.
Mine is full of post-it flags... in my library, that says it all.
