Rubén Donato is Professor of Educational Foundations, Policy, and Practice at the University of Colorado at Boulder and the author of The Other Struggle for Equal Schools: Mexican Americans During the Civil Rights Era, also published by SUNY Press.

Ruben Donato recounts the social and educational history of Mexicans and Hispanos (descendents of Spanish troops who came to the region in the late 1500s) in Colorado from 1920 to 1960. He examines both groups' experiences in sugar beet towns, the experiences of Hispanos in Anglo American-controlled towns, and the Hispano experience in a historically Hispano-controlled town

In a class-action suit against the Sheriff and Maricopa County, a cross section of Latinos, ranging from those with Mexican citizenship holding valid visas to long-time Mexican Americans, had been subjected to unconstitutional actions.

This is a vital pioneering text that synthesizes previously uncovered ground and has done so well. Thank god!!! As a member of the subject class covered, i am overjoyed and have waited years for such a study. Thanks.

Great book...lots of history. How mexicans (first & second generations), were recruited from Mexico & southern states of the U.S.--in order to work for the Great Western Sugar Company. My grandfather (born & raised in Mexico); was one of those people recruited & worked as a sugar beet worker in the fields around the towns of Pierce & Greeley, CO during the 1920's.
