Future General Purpose Supercomputer Architecture, Page no 79. Towards exascale supercomputing, both academia and industry have started to investigate the future HPC technologies.

Towards exascale supercomputing, both academia and industry have started to investigate the future HPC technologies. One of the most difficult challenges is the enhancement of energy efficiency of the computer system. We discuss the energy efficiency of existing architecture in this paper.

10 The Future of usions and Recommendations. Conclusion: Advances in algorithms and in software technology at all levels are essential to further progress in solving applications problems using supercomputing. Chapters 1 through 9 describe a long and largely successful history of supercomputing, a present state of turmoil, and an uncertain future. In this chapter the committee summarizes what it has learned during this study and what it recommends be done. Supercomputing software, algorithms, and hardware are closely bound. As architectures change, new software solutions are needed.

Supercomputers play a significant and growing role in a variety of areas important to the nation. They are used to address challenging science and technology problems. In recent years, however, progress in supercomputing in the United States has slowed. The development of the Earth Simulator supercomputer by Japan that the United States could lose its competitive advantage and, more importantly, the national competence needed to achieve national goals. In the wake of this development, the Department of Energy asked the NRC to assess the state of .

Applications of Supercomputers

Applications of Supercomputers. For example, astrophysicists use supercomputers as "time machines" to explore the past and the future of our universe. A supercomputer simulation was created in 2000 that depicted the collision of two galaxies: our own Milky Way and Andromeda.

Approaches to supercomputer architecture have taken dramatic turns since the earliest systems were introduced in the 1960s. Early supercomputer architectures pioneered by Seymour Cray relied on compact innovative designs and local parallelism to achieve superior computational peak performance. However, in time the demand for increased computational power ushered in the age of massively parallel systems.

As the technology of Supercomputing processes, methodologies for approaching problems have also been developed. The main object of this symposium was the interdisciplinary participation of experts in related fields and passionate discussion to work toward the solution of problems. An executive committee especially arranged for this symposium selected speakers and other participants who submitted papers which are included in this volume. Also included are selected extracts from the two sessions of panel discussion, the "Needs and Seeds of Supercomputing", and "The Future of Supercomputing", which arose during a wide-ranging exchange of viewpoints.
