Ballpoint Pen History – Who Invented Ballpoint Pen? Ballpoint pen is a pen that has, as its name says, ball at its point which rotates when dragged across the writing surface and leaves behind ink that comes from the reservoir of the pen. Ball at the point can be of different diameter and can be made of brass, steel, or tungsten carbide. It is today the most widespread writing instrument and has literally changed the way we write. Trying to invent a pen which can write on leather, a tanner John J. Loud invented the first ballpoint pen and patented it in 1888 in America

The Incredible Ball Point Pen tells the story of the ball point pen's painful development, its cacophonous launching, the public hysteria accompanying its debut, and its outrageous and scandalous promotion. It recounts the fabulous riches which followed, the public's rapid and total disillusionment with the product, the collapse of the market, scientific breakthroughs in the 1950s, the industry's resurrection, myriad improvements occurring from 1950 to 1959, and the modern period from 1960 on. This is the most exhaustive work available on early ball point brands, manufacturers, and models. It includes over 400 photos of pens, copies of original ads, patents, documentation, and a comprehensive spotter and price guide. All who appreciate the ball point pen as a collectible and investment and who wish to further their knowledge about this fascinating topic will certainly want this book.

Nice book with excellent photos - makes it possible to really see what the pens look like. Not as informative as I wanted for researching ages and variations of pens.

Great treatise on the revolution and evolution of the ball point pen. An interesting read for history buffs and a good guide for collectors. The author tries to cover all the bases from inception, concept, patents, successes, failures and the public's roller coaster like acceptance of this industry's pioneering and engineering journey to creating a writing instrument everyone uses and takes for granted.

It's all about low-end pens. I was hoping this would go into fine writing as well but it's just a lot of history that frankly isn't nearly as interesting as i hoped and a catalog of someones low-brow pen collection; largely advertising pens. There is nothing else written on the history or collecting of ballpoint pens to my knowledge but there certainly could be because this didn't do the job for me.

Fabulous gift for a collector.

Great book. I pick it up often. Sadly made in China.

Good book for pen fans.

very satisfied
A wonderful resource and insight into this fascinating topic. The ball point pen was the iPhone of its day in terms of creating hysteria and demand. Apparently, though, it wasn't until 1965 that the ball point pen finally and for all times overtook the fountain pen in terms of dollar value of writing instruments. Well written and researched with many patents and illustrations. The photos are very good considering they were taken before Adobe Photoshop was available! I really love the photos of the original print ads from the '40s through the '60's too - especially those famous actors and other personalities of the times. "5-Star" all the Way
