If you like big glossy photos with beautiful colors it's fantastic. If you're looking for useful information you're out of luck. :(

I have an earlier version of this book from 2008 and it's a dense tome of activities, restaurants, lodging information, and maps. The new edition pales in comparison and frequently left us wanting more. We would have particularly liked more maps (there are hardly any) and more detailed 'getting there and away' sections (again lots of places in the book lack this very useful information).

All in all it's 10% the quality and usefulness of the old edition; sadly it's not 10% of the price. Look elsewhere for good information this time. And if this is the direction Lonely Planet is going I'll definitely look elsewhere for guidebooks in the future.
  • Kagrel
Compared to the extremely helpful LP Thailand book, this seemed touristy and not for the budget backpacker. I ended up returning this and purchasing the Rough Guide book instead in preparation for my trip to CR.

Inaccurate information ,badly written - but pretty pictures. I hope other will be better, Our next trip is to Norway
  • Rishason
Read all about sites, activities, places to stay prior to trip. Accurate descriptions of all. Made reservation directly on a recommended hotel's website and received full, traditional CR (vs. continental) breakfast after great night's sleep. Thanks, Lonely Planet!
  • Moogura
Ordered for my daughter who was to live in Costa Rica for a month
  • YSOP
I had a different Costa Rica travel book years ago that was wonderful and helped me plan a trip there. Now having even been there I find this book confusing. Too many pictures and categories of info.
  • WUNDERKIND
Does not really tell you much. You can find more information online about what to do and where to go. Approximate prices are not included and descriptions are very shallow.
Not thrilled with info in this guide
